The life of the Community is centred on our Community House at Cheltenham, a south-eastern bay-side suburb of Melbourne. Built in the 1930s, the House is set in extensive grounds. It includes a Chapel, refectory and library, as well as offices and living space for the Sisters. There is also an adjoining guest wing, and nearby, our St Julian’s Retreat Centre. There are also some Sisters living and ministering in Footscray, Clayton, Brighton, East Malvern and Lorne. The leader of the Community is the Mother Superior, who is elected every three years by vote of all professed Sisters. The current Mother is Sister Carol, who was elected in April 2011.
Today, the C.H.N. Sisters continue important ministries of pastoral care and chaplaincy. We seek to provide personal support for people experiencing crisis. We engage in ministries of hospitality and spiritual ministries of many kinds. Three C.H.N. Sisters are ordained priests and may have parish duties. Others help organize play groups, work in Op Shops, visit and participate in a variety of parish groups, and get involved as pastoral assistants. Some Sisters are pastoral workers in hospitals. Still others lead quiet days and retreats, and offer spiritual companioning. We run a small Retreat and Spirituality Centre, St Julian's, and host another Gathering Space for day groups.
Always, in the background, are the quiet ministries which keep our houses functioning. Within the life of each Sister there are times for house duties, for private prayer and devotional reading, for hobbies and recreation. We have a large library to support both study and recreation. Our creative gifts are encouraged, and in the past, beautiful vestments were made and embroidered. The office at the Community House sells a range of items showing the work of the Sisters.
